Motivational Interviewing
The manual by Liisa Riittinen introduces an intoxicant rehabilitation method, based on cognitive theory, that was elaborated in Mikkeli Prison, where a team of two interviewers carries out a set of usually three motivational interviews with an inmate participating on a voluntary basis. The themes of the interviews include intoxicant abuse and its consequences in one’s personal life, the hope for change, the realization of change, and the motivation for rehabilitation. It is possible to support these themes by using exercise sheets the models for which can be found in the manual. The manual describes the prerequisites for realizing the series of interviews in prison, such as arranging organizational support and the two interviewers’ cooperation, where a proposal for the division of work between the interviewers is put forth.
